Want to add an animated GIF to one of your WhatsApp messages to make your communications more lively? It is entirely possible, but it follows specific rules set by Meta. Here is how to do it.
GIFs can only be added inside a marketing template. This is a rule set by Meta: you cannot send a GIF in a free-form message, in a utility or authentication template, or outside the scope of approved templates.
In practice, this means that to use a GIF in a WhatsApp flow (abandoned cart, win-back, campaign, etc.), you need to include it in a marketing template submitted to Meta for approval.
When creating your marketing template in Kanal, you add the GIF in the media header, exactly as you would for a standard image or video.
You can upload your file in either of these two formats:
GIF: the classic animated GIF format.
MP4: a short video without sound, played as a GIF on the WhatsApp side.

For your file to be accepted by Meta, it must meet the following constraint:
The MP4 file must not exceed 3.5 MB.
If your file exceeds this limit, you will need to compress it or shorten it before uploading. Several free online tools let you compress an MP4 or convert a GIF into a lightweight MP4.
After submission, Meta reviews your template (usually within a few minutes to a few hours). Once the template is approved, you can use it in any marketing flow or campaign: the GIF sends like any other message, with no extra steps on your side.
Your recipients will then see the GIF animate directly in the WhatsApp conversation, which can significantly boost the visual impact of your campaigns (product launches, promotions, cart reminders, etc.).
Go for short GIFs (2 to 5 seconds) to stay under the 3.5 MB limit and grab attention quickly.
Make sure the visual stays readable on mobile (square or 16:9 landscape format recommended).
If you are starting from a heavy GIF, convert it to an MP4 without sound: the result looks identical on WhatsApp and the file is usually much lighter.
Avoid overly aggressive or flashing animated content, which can hurt the perceived quality of your brand.
