Kanal gives you plenty of flexibility to send your marketing campaigns. Depending on where your audience comes from, you can use static messages or personalized ones powered by variables. This guide covers the three available sending methods and their technical specifics.
If you want to use an audience already present in your Kanal interface, go to the Lists and segments section in the sidebar.
A list is a static group of contacts. Unlike segments, lists cannot be filled through a file import. They are filled exclusively through your automations (for example, by adding an "Add to list" node at the end of a welcome or support flow).
A segment is a dynamic audience based on precise criteria. You can create segments by filtering your contacts on:
Your Shopify store data (total amount spent, date of last purchase).
Behavioral data on Kanal (interaction with a message).
Your choice of WhatsApp template depends directly on the audience source you will use when creating your campaign.
Sending via a Kanal List or Segment: Personalization variables (e.g. {{1}}) are not supported. You must use a static template.
Sending via CSV Import or Klaviyo Segment: Personalization variables are supported. You can use dynamic templates that include the first name, a unique promo code, or any other information contained in your file.
Once in the Campaign section, after naming your project and selecting your template, you need to choose your audience from the following three options:
Choose this option to target contacts already segmented in your tool. As mentioned above, no variable mapping will be offered, the message will be sent as is.
This option pulls in the dynamic segments you created in Klaviyo. You will then need to match your template variables with the properties of your Klaviyo profiles (e.g. match {{1}} with "First Name").
This is the ideal method for sending a campaign to an external or one-off database.
Process: Upload your CSV file directly in the campaign creation interface.
Personalization: Unlike internal lists, the CSV import lets you use variables. During the import, the interface will ask you to match the columns of your file (First name, City, etc.) with the {{1}}, {{2}} variables of your template.
After selecting and configuring your audience, Kanal generates a summary:
Cost estimate: The system calculates the projected cost of the send. Note that invalid numbers and contacts who opted out will not be billed.
Scheduling: You can trigger the send immediately or schedule the campaign for a later time.
As soon as the campaign is launched, you can track results in real time in the campaign list or on your Home page:
Number of successful sends.
Revenue generated.
Return on investment (ROI).
Button click rate.
This structure lets you pick the method that best fits your needs: the simplicity of internal lists for informational messages, or the power of CSV and Klaviyo for highly personalized messages.
